Floor slab poured: what you can still check

A freshly poured slab is fully visible for a short window only. After that the next storey or the roof structure sits on top of it, and slab edges, penetrations and connections disappear under the build-up.

The most common expensive defects in the fresh slab

Missing or concreted-over penetrations

Openings for the chimney, ventilation or service shafts get forgotten or poured shut. Core drilling afterwards is expensive and can hit the reinforcement.

Cracks from drying out too quickly

Without proper curing the slab surface cracks. The floor build-up later hides these cracks, which can lead to unnoticed moisture damage.

Uneven slab surface

Large height differences come back to bite you during the floor build-up: it gets thicker, more expensive and door heights no longer work out.

Poor edge detailing and connections

At balconies and cantilevers the connection decides whether you get thermal bridges and moisture damage. That is exactly where work gets improvised.

What to document and check now in the fresh slab

  1. Overview of the slab area

    Photograph the whole slab from several positions. This documents the overall condition before construction continues.

  2. Every recess and penetration

    Check every opening against the plan. Photograph the location and size (place a scale in the picture) and report deviations immediately.

  3. Slab edges and cantilevers in detail

    Photograph balcony connections and outer edges all around in particular. These areas are critical later for thermal bridges.

  4. Surface in raking light

    Photograph the surface at an angle to the light. The cast shadows make cracks and unevenness clearly visible.
