Foundation slab poured: what you can still check and document now

Reinforcement, pipes and waterproofing details are now in the concrete — no one checks there anymore. Two tasks remain: document what is visible and request the pouring records. Plan for three rounds: as soon as walkable, after formwork removal and before wall construction. You do not need to judge anything yourself.

Expensive mistakes that can still be noticed now

Poor waterproofing and joint concept

Ask to see the waterproofing concept. Waterproof concrete alone does not guarantee a watertight slab, the interplay with joints and penetrations is crucial. Metal waterstops can only be assessed based on this system detail.

Misplaced conduits and drainage connections

Only assess the position of the pipes against the construction drawing and fixed reference points like building axes, not by eye. If recesses are off, chipping will be needed later or the pipe will be visibly offset.

Wrong level and slab geometry

Always measure outer dimensions, upstands and level against the drawing, as deviations cannot be seen in the concrete. If the top edge is wrong, plinth height, door thresholds and floor build-up shift along with it.

Earthing system without documentation

Request the earthing plan, assignable photos and test reports. With watertight construction or under-slab insulation, the earth electrode often lacks direct ground contact, so a ring earth electrode is usually needed.

Honeycombing, voids and early cracks

Document deep voids, exposed reinforcement and cracks, but do not assess them yourself. Lack of curing or unclean pouring cause such defects, which becomes particularly critical with watertight elements.

What you should document and request now

  1. Photograph overview, penetrations and geometry

    Take overview shots of the slab and close-up photos of every pipe. Measure their distances at right angles to fixed building axes and compare them with the drawing. Label all photos immediately.

  2. Have the slab level checked

    Secure the survey or setting-out record of the level check. The top edge must be surveyed at several points against the planned datum, a photo of a spirit level is not enough for this.

  3. Compare joint sealing and connection details

    Photograph the entire perimeter with position, joints, corners and damage close up. Put the system's installation instructions next to it, as this is the only way to assess later whether the installation fits.

  4. Second round after formwork removal

    After formwork removal, document faces, edges, exposed reinforcement and cracks. Always place a folding rule or a tape measure when photographing, as many voids only become visible without formwork.

  5. Request records and reports

    Request the documentation of the reinforcement, cast-in parts and earthing system from before the pour. Also ask for pouring records like delivery notes and proof of curing.
